Help kaiako move beyond describing changes to their practice and consider the question that really matters: What difference did these changes make for learners?

This practical ECE reflection template is designed for the later stages of the Professional Growth Cycle (PGC), when kaiako are ready to evaluate the impact of their professional learning and changes to teaching practice on children/ākonga and their learning.

The template encourages kaiako to draw on evidence from their everyday practice, including observations, learning stories, assessment and planning documentation, children’s responses and participation, whānau conversations, photos or video, and feedback from colleagues.

Evaluate impact for individual learners

A dedicated section supports kaiako to look at the children whose learning they regularly assess, plan for and document and consider:

  • What difference have the changes to my practice made for this learner and their learning?
  • What evidence do I have of this?

This helps keep the reflection focused on actual learner outcomes and evidence of progress, rather than simply describing what the teacher did differently.

Reflect on the overall impact

Further prompts help kaiako consider:

  • the changes or refinements they made to practice
  • what the evidence shows across individual learners
  • differences or unexpected outcomes
  • aspects of practice that did not have the anticipated impact
  • what they have learned about the relationship between teaching practice and learner outcomes
  • what they will continue, strengthen or refine

The reflection can be completed in writing or, for services using an electronic PGC portfolio, the questions can be used as prompts for a voice or video reflection.

Specifically developed for kaiako completing a Professional Growth Cycle in ECE services.
