Celebrate the special people in every child’s life with this inclusive six-page printable keepsake.
A Little Book About My Special Person provides an inclusive alternative to a traditional Father’s Day activity. It allows each child to choose someone important to them — whether that is Dad, one of their dads, Mum, one of their mums, Grandad, Koro, Nana, Grandma, another whānau member, caregiver, or another special person in their life.
This makes it particularly useful for ECE services wanting to ensure Father’s Day activities are welcoming of different family structures, including children with two mums, two dads, single-parent families, blended families, whānau caregivers, or children whose dad is not part of their life.
Through simple prompts, kaiako can talk with tamariki about their chosen person and scribe the child’s own words and ideas. Children can personalise each page through drawing, colouring, painting, collage, stickers or mark-making.
This activity is also great for supporting emergent literacy, particularly children’s growing understanding that print, pictures and words carry meaning. As kaiako scribe children’s ideas and read their words back to them, tamariki can begin to see the connection between what they say and the words that are written on the page.
