Pre-ERO Readiness Review

Preparing for an ERO visit can feel overwhelming, particularly with ongoing changes across the ECE sector and increasing expectations around curriculum quality, evaluation for improvement, and visible teaching practice.

This practical pre-ERO support service is designed to help centre leaders identify possible gaps, and priority next steps before ERO arrives.

The review includes two on-site visits:

Visit 1 – Documentation & Systems Review (Approx. 4 Hours)

This visit focuses on reviewing the service’s documentation, systems, and operational processes, including areas such as:

  • curriculum planning and assessment,
  • learning portfolios,
  • internal evaluation and operational review,
  • policies and procedures,
  • professional growth cycle documentation,
  • leadership and management systems,
  • and alignment between documentation and practice.

The goal is to identify strengths, possible compliance gaps, and areas where evidence of quality practice could be strengthened before review.

Visit 2 – Teaching Practice & Environment Review (Approx. 4 Hours)

The second visit focuses on observing teaching practice and the learning environment in action.

This may include:

  • interactions between kaiako and children,
  • curriculum implementation,
  • bicultural practice,
  • culturally responsive pedagogy,
  • inclusion and learning support,
  • learning environments,
  • child agency and engagement,
  • and evidence of intentional teaching and progression over time.

Follow-Up Review Report

Following the visits, the service will receive a written summary report outlining:

  • areas for further development,
  • practical recommendations,
  • and suggested priority actions.

The purpose of this process is not to “catch services out,” but to provide practical, supportive guidance that helps leaders feel more confident and prepared.

This service is suitable for:

  • centres expecting an upcoming ERO visit,
  • services wanting an external perspective on current practice,
  • or leadership teams wanting to strengthen systems and quality practice over time.

Travel outside the local area may incur additional costs.
