HS101-103: ECE Hygiene (Team 5-15 Learner License)

Good hygiene practices are an essential part of keeping tamariki and adults safe and preventing the spread of illness in an early childhood service. But good practice relies on everyone in the team understanding not only what needs to be done, but how and why.

This practical online learning module helps ECE teams strengthen their understanding of everyday hygiene requirements and the practices that support a safe, clean and hygienic environment.

The module covers key areas of hygiene practice, including:

• general cleaning and sanitising requirements
• the difference between cleaning and sanitising
• cleaning toys, equipment, surfaces and learning materials
• hygienic storage of equipment, mattresses and bedding
• laundering and managing linen
• safe and hygienic nappy changing practices
• cleaning and sanitising nappy changing areas
• maintaining children’s dignity and respect during nappy changes
• practical expectations for consistently implementing hygiene procedures.

The module also supports staff to understand the requirements of the 2026 ECE Licensing Criteria HS101–HS103, covering the cleanliness and hygienic storage of premises and equipment, laundering of linen, and nappy changing procedures.
