Strengthen your service’s approach to intentional teaching, assessment, planning and curriculum evaluation with four practical resources designed specifically for early childhood services.

This bundle brings together an internal evaluation exemplar and three practical curriculum planning and evaluation exemplars to help kaiako and leaders move beyond simply documenting children’s learning to intentionally supporting, assessing and evaluating learning progress over time.

What’s included

1. Internal Evaluation Exemplar – Strengthening Assessment, Planning & Evaluation

Follow a realistic example of how one early childhood service evaluated and strengthened its assessment and planning practices.

The exemplar demonstrates the internal evaluation process from noticing and investigation through to action, monitoring and evaluation, including the evidence gathered, changes made and key learnings that emerged.

2. Curriculum Planning & Evaluation Exemplar – Babies

A practical example following a 9-month-old baby over three months, showing how intentional teaching, assessment, planning and evaluation can make learning progress visible over time.

Demonstrates Notice → Recognise → Respond → Evaluate, with links to Te Whāriki learning outcomes and Kōwhiti Whakapae progress stages. Includes two formats suitable for services using Storypark or Educa.

3. Curriculum Planning & Evaluation Exemplar – 2–3-Year-Olds

A practical example following a 2.5–3-year-old child over several months, showing how intentional teaching, assessment, planning and evaluation can support learning and make progress visible over time.

Demonstrates Notice → Recognise → Respond → Evaluate, with links to Te Whāriki learning outcomes and Kōwhiti Whakapae progressions, intentional teaching strategies and meaningful whānau involvement. Suitable for adapting to Storypark, Educa or your service’s existing planning system.

4. Curriculum Planning & Evaluation Exemplar – Preschoolers

A practical monthly curriculum planning example for 3–4-year-olds, showing how intentional teaching, assessment, planning and evaluation can work together to make children’s learning and progress visible.

Combines group and individual planning, with three learning stories demonstrating Notice → Recognise → Respond → Evaluate, links to Te Whāriki learning outcomes and Kōwhiti Whakapae progress stages, and examples of intentional teaching and curriculum evaluation

The examples are designed to complement commonly used platforms such as Storypark or Educa and can be adapted to suit your service’s existing approach.

From improvement action to improved practice

If your service has identified intentional teaching, assessment, planning, children’s learning progress or curriculum evaluation as an area for improvement, this bundle provides practical support to help you take action.

Together, these four resources help connect intentional teaching → stronger assessment and planning → meaningful evaluation → clearer evidence of children’s learning and progress over time
